How to become an owner-operator with SunTransExpress

In shortWhat you need to lease on, how long the paperwork takes, and what the first week of dispatch looks like.

Becoming an owner-operator on expedited freight is less about the truck than most people expect and more about being reachable, being ready, and having your paperwork clean before the first call comes in. Here’s what the path actually looks like, step by step.

Who qualifies

Expedited freight runs on small units and fast decisions. To lease on with SunTransExpress as an owner-operator you need a unit in good mechanical shape, a clean driving record, and the willingness to run time-critical loads — often picked up within an hour of the call.

  • Valid driver’s licence and at least one year of verifiable commercial driving experience.
  • Cargo van, sprinter, box truck or straight truck, model year within the last 10 years.
  • Cargo insurance and liability coverage in place before the first dispatch.
  • A phone that stays on: expedited dispatch works around the clock.

You do not need your own MC authority to start. You can run under SunTransExpress authority and file for your own later, once you know the business — we cover that choice in a separate guide.

Choosing and checking your unit

Most people starting out come in on a cargo van or a sprinter, because those are the units that carry the majority of expedited freight and cost the least to keep running. Before you buy anything, get the truck inspected by someone who is not selling it to you, and budget for the three items that most often turn a good week into a bad one: tires, brakes, and the DEF/emissions system on a newer diesel.

If you’re still deciding between van, sprinter and box truck, read the unit comparison first. The short version: buy the unit you can keep loaded, not the biggest one you can finance.

The paperwork

Onboarding is a single packet: the lease agreement, W-9, proof of insurance, unit photos, and the inspection report. Most drivers finish it in a day. Nothing goes out for dispatch until every document is on file — it protects the load and it protects you.

Have the insurance certificate ready before you start the packet. It is the one item that usually adds days.

Two details worth getting right the first time. Make sure the certificate names the correct entity and the correct coverage limits — a certificate that arrives with the wrong named insured has to be reissued, and that is another two days. And send the unit photos in daylight, all four sides plus the empty cargo area; they go on file as the condition record for your truck.

Got your unit and your licence? The application takes about ten minutes.

Your first week

The first loads are deliberately short. They let dispatch learn your pace and let you learn how our board works — how offers arrive, how you accept, how check calls are logged. After that, the length and the pay of the runs move with your track record.

What dispatch expects

  1. Answer or call back within fifteen minutes of an offer.
  2. Check in at pickup, at each stop, and at delivery.
  3. Photograph the bill of lading before you leave the dock.

None of that is bureaucracy for its own sake. On expedited freight the customer has usually stopped a line or held a surgery schedule waiting on the shipment, and the first question they ask is where the truck is right now. A driver dispatch can answer for is a driver dispatch keeps loaded.

Getting paid

Settlements run weekly. Clean paperwork submitted the same day is paid the same week — the most common reason a settlement slips is a missing signed BOL, not a dispute over the rate.

Plan your own cash the same way. Fuel and tolls go out daily while settlements come in weekly, so the first month is the tightest month you will have. Going in with a few weeks of running costs in reserve is the difference between choosing your loads and taking whatever is nearest.

What the work actually pays

Expedited rates are built on urgency and distance rather than weight, and what reaches your account depends as much on deadhead and fuel as on the rate per mile. We’ve put the full breakdown, with the cost lines that actually move the number, in what owner-operators earn on expedited freight.

Five mistakes that cost new operators money

  • Buying too much truck. Payments do not pause when the board is quiet.
  • Skipping the maintenance reserve. Set aside a fixed amount per mile from week one, not after the first breakdown.
  • Chasing rate per mile. A high rate into a dead lane loses to a fair rate into a busy one.
  • Going quiet. Dispatch plans your next load around where you say you’ll be. Silence means you get planned around.
  • Sitting on paperwork. A BOL photographed at the dock is paid this week; one that shows up Monday is not.

What to do next

If you have a unit and a clean record, the application is the fastest way to find out where you stand — it takes about ten minutes and a dispatcher follows up the same day. If you’re still choosing equipment, or still deciding whether to run under your own authority, start with the two guides linked above and call us before you sign anything.

Most of what you’d be running is time-critical freight: automotive parts, medical and pharmaceutical shipments, and trade show and production freight with a fixed on-site date.

Quick FAQ

Do I need a CDL?

Not for a cargo van, sprinter, or a straight truck under 26,001 lb GVWR. Above that threshold, or if the load is placarded hazmat, you do. Check the GVWR on the door sticker, not the size of the box.

How long does onboarding take?

Most drivers are dispatch-ready within a few days of sending a complete packet. The delay is almost always the insurance certificate, so start there.

Can I run only regional lanes?

You tell dispatch your operating area and your home time, and we plan around it. Expedited pays best on the longer runs, but plenty of our operators run a fixed region by choice.

Got questions about running with us? Dispatch will walk you through it — no pressure, no obligation.
